WHAT TO CHOOSE BETWEEN LCD AND PLASMA

Now the TV viewing becomes totally amazing,TV becomes a style statement for a consumers because of extreme growth of technology and style statement from these extremely rocking gadgets.

Digital transmission and improved technology have vastly change TV viewing.Previously people already live in the era of CRT(cathode ray tube), now staid old CRT is giving way to LCD and Plasma TV. LCD and PDP(plasma display panels) are gaining popularity not bacause of their oomph factor, but for the actual screening pleasure that the viewers obtain from them.
Even after technology improvement,CRT could neither become as thin as LCD or PDP nor wide. The maximum size of a CRT screen is 29 inches.Compare this with the LCD's that measures100 inches. And because LCD and PDP have more connectivity options than the CRTs, these thin panels can deliver superior, true to life high definition viewing.Thas comes at a heavy price tough. This also explains why the normal colour CRT still prevails in a price sensitive market like India.
Now in technological aspect CRT is a history, the real fight is now between PDP and LCD. Both serve the high end market and have a lots of fearture to offer. Here is an indepth look at which technology has the upper hand and which technology has the upper hand and what and why you should buy them.

TERMS USE IN A HDTV

CONTRAST RATIO
Contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest and darkest image a display produces. For example a contrast ratio of 1000:1 means the brightest pixel on the panel is 1,000 times brighter than the darkest one. Higher the ratio, the better.

HDMI
HDMI is a digital video standard using both a specific lead and socket that can transmit both uncompressed hi-definition digital audio and video signals.

1080P
1080p means the resolution of the picture is the highest,1,920 vertical pixels by1,080 horizontal pixels.P stands for progressive scanning, which is the way picture comes on the screen.

RESPONSE TIME
Response time is the time taken by a pixel on the display screen to turn from black to white and black again. It is usually measured in millisecond.

COMPOSITE,COMPONENT,VGA
Composite ,component,VGA are various video and audio ports that transfer signals from set top boxes or DVD players to the display panel to emit video or sound waves. They can connect various devices like a PC,home theatre systems,DVD palyers, gaming consoles, etc.

SCREEN SIZE
Screen size of the display panel is actually the diagonal corner to corner distance of the video screen. The frame or panel is not included in the sreen size.

VIEWING ANGLE
This is the angle at which the viewer can clearly see the picture on the screen.Seeing the image from beyond the viewing angle gives an inferior or dark image.

PLASMAS: CHEAP AND GOOD
Plasmas are very popular when they first arrived. But now LCD are more reputable due to their capacity to support true full high definition of 1080p.
Plasma support a maximum of 720p technology.
Plasma panels are available from the size of 32 inches and go up to 63 inches. There are 105 inch PDP available too,but they are not built for consumer use.
Plasmas support a viewing angle of 178 degrees.
Weightwise ,PDP are fairly heavy due to the intrinsic material component.
These flat panels heat up fast,so most of them come with cooling fan inserted at the back of the frame.
The usual life span of these TV is between 30,000 and 60,000 hours after which the lamp slowly fades.(Nowadays the manufacturers claim that they are making PDPs that may live upto 1000,000 hours).A major problem with the plasmas is burn-in.It is a process in which prolonged display of the menu or other graphical elements can create a permenent ghost-like image on the screen. This happens because over time the phospher loses its luminosity, leaving faint images of the menu or other frequently usedarea of the screen visible to the eye, even when other images are playing out on the screen.
Due to their weight,PDPs are the best placed on a table or a firm TV trolley.Mounting them on a wall require extra precautions and proper bracketing for support. With their glass screens,PDPs are also very fragile.
When it comes to colour and contrast, plasmas are extremely good. The picture quality is superb and wheather you are a movie buff or a sports fan you will enjoy every moment of it.The slimmest plasma measure in at 95mm-almost three times the slimmest LCDs of the same size.
*Also if you are contemplating a plasma set to liven up things at your high altitude vacation home, think again. The gas inside the plasma is stressed due to rarer air and each cell is to perform harder.Due to this life span of TV is greatly reduced.

LCDs:COSTLIER AND NO BURN-INS
LCDs come in an array of designs-everything from glossy panels to transparent panels.LCD display full HD functionality, making them hot favourite for home theatre and console gaming.
These are available as low as 14 inches to 108 inches.
LCDs support a maximum viewing angle of 175 degree-it has a greater degree of blind spot than a plasma with its 178 degrees viewing angle. With a deapth of 35mm or less,LCDs are thinner than PDPs,making it feasible for wall mounting without extra support. There are no heavy components inside the LCDs that weigh it down, unlike in PDPs
Cooling is also not much of a problem in LCDs but try to keep LCD in a cool dry place and not directly near air conditioner.
The screen refresh rates of LCD are as low as 8 milliseconds, which is good for fast paced scenes in movies or games.
Unlike in plasmas,LCDs do not suffer fromany picture burn in.The life span of an LCD is similar to that of PDP at 40,000 to 60,000 viewing hours.Handling an LCD is fairly easy as it is not as fragile as the plasmas ans so can be move around.LCD installation is so easy and many of them come with motorised stands for hassle free rotation.
Unlike the plasmas glass screens,LCDs have reflection free screens which do not throw back annoying rays or hamper the brightness or contrast.Colour too has improved in LCDs.Also, unlike plasmas LCDs are not affected by high or low altitudes.
LCD consumes less power than a plasma of the same size.

CONCLUSION
A comparison between PDPs and LCDs indicate that the liquid crystal displays have the edge over the gas displays .Though LCDs can make your wallet a lot lighter, they also give much more to viewer- THE BEST PICTURE QUALITY,THE HIGHEST RESOLUTION,LOWER POWER COSTS. however,if you are who thinks of TVs in the short term and change system every few years, them thik of plasmas, with their lower price tags, are the set to opt for. Television sets of size 42 inches and above might be cheaper in plasma than in LCDs.
